Descendants Of Cain
7th September 2001, Devonshire Arms, Camden

Another warm and muggy night in the Dev, waiting for DoC to come on stage and an anticipatory hush has settled over the mixed crowd. This is the first time we have seen them since Gotham, and look forward to something more than the truncated set that they delivered there.

If I (unfairly but unintentionally) gave the impression in my review of Gotham than DoC were nothing more than a Nephilim re-incarnation, then I sincerely apologise. They deserve much better than that. Their sound is redolent of many influences, yet filled with an innocent individuality that is very endearing. More than that they have cast aside the withering pretensions of many of their peers, whilst retaining sincerity about their music that is evident from the first hearing.

The vocals of Mr. Kruger have a roughness and passion of someone much older. The subtlety and precision of guitars and keyboards melds so seamlessly. I would go so far as to say that all three conduct themselves with a maturity and professionalism way beyond their years, which is not a commonplace event.

This is a band that I look forward to seeing again and again, in the sure and certain hope that they will continue to shape and mature along their well-chosen path. In the meantime I eagerly await their next recorded offering.
